AWARD!

Look what I got from Molly (cap-lady)!! A Friendship Award!

Thanks SO much Molly. It means a lot to me.

Boy oh boy is it still hot here! Yesterday it reached 35C but with the humidity it was 41C - and we're on the ocean. We have an inland breeze rather than an ocean breeze when there is any breeze at all. Mostly its stagnant. 41C is about 111F.

It's impossible to think, move, stay awake. Thank goodness a few years ago when this happened we bought a stand alone air conditioner so we have that going. It's still 80F in the room it's in though... but at least it's a dry heat. This isn't supposed to clear up until next week.

Now I know once it clears up we're in for some crummy end of summer weather here but I wish we could get that for just one day. This weekend is a holiday. I don't know what it used to be called - First weekend in August holiday? Now here in BC we call it BC Day. Each province has their own name for it.

I know how it came about. The government needed one more statutory holiday in order to make the bi weekly paycheques even out. So they made one - guess if anyone would be able to do that it would be the government. I used to work for the government. Ugh.. can't believe I actually admitted that!

Anyway, this weekend the town 10 mins over from us is having their annual Sun Festival which includes a parade and a park full of stuff for kids. But what they have that I hate to miss is a 2 Day Antiques Fair. It's held in the Center that's their ice rink in winter. But there's no air conditioning in there or anything. So even just the heat coming off bodies on a regular day is oppressive enough, I can't imagine what it's going to be like on a weekend like this. Maybe the vendors will bring fans. I think they should bring out the Zamboni and put some ice down. We'd all have to wear skates to get around but at least we'd be comfortable. How can a place that's so darn cold in the winter be so darn hot in the summer? Husband says he's not going but I just gotta try it. I've never missed one. I've found some neat stuff there over the years.

Hot, Hot, Hot

I decided to update my photo and now my whole profile disappeared! But I got it fixed by adding a gadget and doing "about me" again... don't know why that worked.

Boy it's hot here again today. How hot is it Shirley? It's so hot that the air conditioning in my car feels like a warm breeze. Of course I didn't drive far cause it's too hot to be in the car. The poor cleaning guy from COIT is coming tomorrow. When they called to confirm I said "Isn't it too hot for them to be doing work like this?" The guy said "Yes." Then I asked if I postponed if they'd send the guy to someone else's house anyway. He said "Yes." Boy they care about their employees huh?

So I've got a huge container of water cooling in the fridge and I'm going to put fans in the rooms that aren't being cleaned to try to make it at least a bit cooler in here. The humidity is sitting at 95%. It's gonna take a week for the rugs to dry. This is our Galileo Themometer. To be comfortable in here there should only be 2 guys at the bottom. At the moment I can almost hear them fighting for space *LOL*

Candle Mat

I've been working on this one for awhile. I like working with wool.. for one thing it doesn't fray :0) This is a pattern from Bareroots.
Now I'm getting to work on a new stitchery for a sample for the store. I haven't felt like quilting lately so it's nice to have something to do.
It's soooo hot here. Hazel I think we have your Ontario weather. It's going to be in the 30'sC all week. This is only the 4th time it's happened since records started being kept in 1881. They had a summer like this in 1928 and another one in 2003. I think that's the year we decided to buy a freestanding air conditioner.
We had an amazing thunder storm last night. We don't get thunderstorms here so all the neighbours were out in the street, beer in hand, taking in the show... well until the rain started anyway.

THANKS EVERYONE

Thanks for all the support when I was having a bad time a few days ago. I'm feeling much better now. At one time Michael did have a Social Worker (kids with Aspergers are allowed services until they turn 18) and she said I was the only person she'd ever met who could plunge so deep and come back up so quickily. Guess I did it cause I had to if I wanted to survive.

A woman in AlAnon once said we're all born with a bucket of slop over our heads (although she didn't use the word slop). Sometimes the bucket stays upright and things are good, other days bits dribble out but we can handle it. Then there are times that the bucket just dumps the whole thing at once. I'll never forget that. Hope my bucket stays empty for awhile *LOL*

I had to go to my doctor yesterday to get the results of last week's blood tests. I got nothing but good news :0) My bloodpressure is 110/70. It's never been that low in my life! It really makes me happy to see that lifestyle changes really do work. I limit salt is the biggest change I've made, and exercise - although I've been pretty lax at that lately aside from gardening. And my kidneys are still functioning at 38% which is where they were 18 months ago. So I have hope that they're leveling out there and won't go lower for awhile.

I told her the problems I was having - way more than just Michael. I was beginning to think it was me. I have a sister who is paranoid schizophrenic and she always blames everything on other people. I'm always afraid I'm like her. The doctor assured me I'm not crazy and I don't need therapy. I just have a lot on my plate. That helps.

Then last night I went out to a birthday dinner for one of the girls at the shop. There were 10 of us and it was really fun to spend a couple of hours with quilters. We had a lot of fun, lots of laughter. Does the soul good.

Model A Toy Car

I love vintage things so decided to join in Suzannes Vintage Thingie Thursdays. Visit her site here http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/2009/07/vintage-thingies-thursday-just-because.html and join the fun. Or just go and click on the links to see other vintage posts.

My first vintage thing is a toy car that belonged to my father. It wasn't a childhood toy. It was given to him sometime in the 1940's because he drove a 1929 Model T - much to my horror when I got old enough to realize no one else was driving something that old in the 1950's! This is a Model A, not a Model T but it's really neat. My mom gave it to me about 20 years ago so I'd have a remembrance of my dad. I'm glad she did cause it's about the only thing I have. I keep it on my bedside table.

The Real Me

First of all, like my new background? I decided I wanted to change. I am a Gemini after all.. we live to change things around.

Now the downside of being a Gemini, or maybe it's just the downside of being me. I'm not going to get all "poor me". I've had a lot of stumbling blocks I've had to overcome in my life but I'm still here so that makes me a survivor. What's past is past. I believe that everything we go through is a lesson that we need. Sometimes it's hard to see the reason for the lesson but I've been able to see some of them. I have to tell you that therapy and learning about myself in Al Anon is really the reason I'm still here. I needed those lessons too and was fortunate to get what I did from them. I'm relatively happy most of the time, I laugh too loud sometimes - which is a good thing - I can see the humour in a lot of things that people can't. When our house flooded and the rug was floating I just sat looking at it and laughed. What else was I going to do? I could drive myself crazy worrying about it or I could think about how funny it looked just floating there. Of course I forgot I had a 2 week old baby in the house. Thank goodness the civic crews came and pumped it out and got our furnace started again (it was January) so I didn't have to take 2 kids to a motel. So, there again, humour AND gratitude.

But then there are days like yesterday. I even forgot it was our 36th Anniversary. My husband is out all day unti 4:00 working on his airplane. Then he comes home and has a nap. Because I want to get the carpets cleaned (which is way overdue) I had to vacuum and dust yesterday because we're getting an estimate today and he needs to be able to see any stains on the rug, which I'm happy to say there aren't any of, just general dirt from walking on them.

I also had to do laundry and go to the grocery store. I also had spent 4 1/2 hours on Sunday powerwashing the front of the house. In other words I was tired.

5:00 I'm just starting to prepare dinner when my husband said our TV died. If our TV dies we can't watch Jeopardy at 7:30. I'm sure most of you know about our son Michael who is Autistic (Aspergers to be exact). We watch Jeopardy with him every night at 7:30. He likes it cause he knows a lot of the answers that even the contestants don't know. He doesn't know the easy answers but he knows the hard History and Geography ones - go figure.

So it's either move the little TV from our bedroom or buy a new TV. I don't want to buy a new TV without shopping around but husband said we needed to go look NOW. Michael wanted to know exactly what the TV would look like. Would it be the same size? The same colour? In the same place? I explained that new TV's are shorter and wider than our old one. Well, he didn't like that. He can't handle change at all. I said we had to get one like that or not have a TV at all. He finally agreed.

So off we went. Of course looking at them we started to decide to get a bigger TV and a stand and all this stuff we can't afford at all. We came home and measured again and went back to look again. Finally husband agreed to come home and sleep on it. I was starving by this time. I felt like I was going to pass out so I made him stop at Quizno's and picked up a sub. We got home and I ate mine right away. He, on the other hand, decided he needed to move the smaller TV from our bedroom into the livingroom NOW so we could watch Jeopardy in 10 minutes.

He and Michael got the TV out of the TV cabinet and he hooked up the small one, which was fine but had no sound ARGH! I figured out we needed one of the PVR controls to change channels and the other one to turn the sound up and down. Weird.

Now Michael also has OCD. - which means you can't just leave a TV sitting in the middle of the livingroom. I told him to leave it until we could get a dolly to move it cause it's too heavy. He said okay but then kept moving it bit by bit to where he wanted it to be in the room no matter how many times I told him to stop. Frustrated much?

Then it happened. If I don't tell him to cut his nails he doesn't do it. He looks like Howard Hughes. He also has something wrong with his nails so they're very discoloured and very brittle (probably diet). Next thing I know he says "There goes another toenail." (cause he was still moving the thing and stubbed his toe). I told him if he didn't cut them they'd catch and rip. Well, I was wrong, somewhat, when it comes to him. His peeled right back so it was still attached but almost off and bleeding.

So what do you do? I told him we were off to the ER cause all doctors and clinics are closed at 7:30pm. He was not happy about that. I wasn't happy about that either cause he hasn't been showering (and it's been hot here) and he hasn't been changing into clean clothes. His hair is long and greasy from not showering and from refusing to go to a barber, his jacket is ripped.. he insists on wearing a jacket year round as well as a camoflauge baseball type cap. So I had to walk into the ER with this kid who looks like he lives on skid row - not that there's anything wrong with that if people really do live on the streets but when he lives in a middle class neighbourhood where we have lots of hot water and soap it's embarrassing. I'm struggling. He's 30 years old. He even is able to drive - 12 years without an accident. But when it comes to grooming, diet and exercise forget it. I made him get a once a week paper route so he at least gets out of the house and gets some exercise that one day.

I tried to get him to use the antiseptic that you have to use when you enter the hospital. The lady behind the counter just HAD to say it stinks. Okay, that loses him... he's smell sensitive too. So we sit at the hospital for 2 hours. His anxiety kicks in, which makes my anxiety kick in. He complains and complains and keeps picking things up off the floor and putting them in the garbage (OCD). Then he found a spot of dirt on the curtain. I told him not to touch it about 5 times. It could be blood.. I dunno... we're in ER. I finally insisted he had to rub his hands with the Purell I carry in my purse.

I'm still tired and sitting on a metal stool with no back on it. I took a look at his toe. It had stopped bleeding. I had been talking to two other guys there who had been there for 5 hours waiting. I was in no mood to sit there for 5 hours minimum (it was now 7 hours for those guys and they still hadn't seen a doctor). So I went looking for a nurse and asked if she could just wrap it for me and I'd go to our own doctor today. Thank goodness she agreed and we were able to come home.

We got home and Michael said he couldn't go to the doctor today cause he was nervous that a stranger was coming into the house to give me a quote on the rugs. I called the doctor this morning anyway. Of course she wasn't in today... and she's booked up for tomorrow. So I asked for Thursday. I wanted one for myself to get the results of last weeks blood tests and told her I wanted one for Michael because of his toenail. She said he should be looked at right away and gave me an appointment with the other doctor who's there. Not good. She's a stranger to him even if she is a very good doctor (I've gone to her myself a few times). Michael had woken up and heard me talking to my husband about the doctor appointment. I told him I was dreading telling Michael I was taking him. He said we'd tell him together. Of course as soon as he left to go downstairs out comes Michael saying he heard and he wasn't going to a doctor. I told him I'd give him Ativan. Nope, he didn't want it. He's totally against medication. When he was on it for his OCD he pretended to take it and then I found about 2 weeks worth hidden under a book in his room.

Anyway, with the news of the doctor he's even more nervous and hasn't eaten at all today. I told him to cut back what he could of the nail and to cut his other nails short. Next thing I know he comes to me and shows me that the nail is completely gone so he doesn't need to go to the doctor. Now I guess so. He'd cleaned it up and let me spray some antiseptic on it. It looks pretty good.

So now no doctor appointment and he's actually putting on socks inside his runners cause I told him if he wasn't going to wear sandals he needed socks to keep that toe clean.

I'm feeling like an emotional mess. Where's the line between caregiver and parent? Am I a caregiver or a parent or just an annoying old lady? He's 30. Most 30 year olds are allowed to make their own decisions. How far does that extend?

I've decided that if he's not going to shower and keep that hair clean that he has to get it shaved close. It's easier to wash and it doesn't look really greasy when it's dirty. I told him one trip to the barber and then his dad can do it with the trimmers he has.

Oh brother. I better shut up now. I just need someone to talk to. There are no agencies who can help adults with Aspergers, or parents of adults with Aspergers. He's too high functioning.

Stitchery

I haven't been doing a lot of sewing or quilting but I did finish this stitchery. I found it in an copy of Country Threads.

span style="font-family:verdana;">
The photo's a bit blurry. I think the reason all of my photos end up blurry is me, not the camera. My husband commented one day that I was shaking. I noticed it when I was taking this photo. I need to get myself a little tripod so I can get clearer photos. It doesn't happen all the time but I've been doing things around - plus just had my morning coffee - so that explains it.

I've been pulling weeds a lot in the garden too so have a constant sinus headache. I think I've finally pulled the last one and now I need to start trimming and then powerwash. I usually would have gotten to it a lot earlier so it would have been easier but I went off travelling and this is my payment for that. It's been so hot too and I can't stay out there for more than maybe 90 minutes a day. I don't do well in the heat. Today the temperature is still high - 25C (80F) but there's a really nice cool breeze off the ocean so it's tolerable - except now it's too windy. Hard to please much? *LOL*

Today I'm going to catch up on housework anyway. I have the carpet cleaners coming to do an estimate next week - thank goodness! they need cleaning - so I have to get rid of all the dust and stuff I've been ignoring.

The Lost Quilter

Okay so I've been kinda lost around here the last while. Summer will do that to you. But what the title of this post means is I finally got it!!!! Jennifer Chiaverini's latest book!

It is SO good. I love history so the ones that go back into the mid 1800's are my favorites. It's a sad story of slavery but it's also sit on the edge of your seat mystery. I picked it up at the library on Saturday and will probably take it back Wednesday morning. I'm half way through now and I just can't put it down.

That's why I can't buy books anymore. I only buy ones that are out of print or not at our library. And those I buy from Abe Books or somewhere else and don't pay the full price. If I buy them I may as well just throw $25 in the garbage cause I read them in 3 or 4 days and never read them a second time cause I have so many on my list that I want to read.

I was working on the yard a lot of the time last week while the weather was nice. And I've been trying to put my genealogy tree back together. When I bought Window's Vista I lost a lot of information that was on there, even though I had it backed up to disc. I have hard copies but it's so much work putting all that back into the computer. On the other hand I've decided I've come to the end of what I wanted to do so it will be good to get the file drawer cleared out a bit and get my reports printed out once and for all.

I found some neat stuff at my sister's. One is a photo of my dad's gas station. It's such a far cry from what I think of when I think gas station. They didn't have hoists, they had pits that you drove the car over and the workers (my dad) had to go into the pit to change oil or work on the underside of the car. I took a picture of a picture she had. It's very blury and I tried to clarify it plus changed it to greyscale so it can be seen a little better. That big building behind it isn't part of the gas station... only the little front part and a small single garage size attached building. I just can't imagine how cold it must have been in the Ottawa winters!

I always thought it was a Texaco station and what I've discovered was it was the precursor to the Texaco station. It was called "Little Chief". Remember "Fire Chief" by Texaco? This was before that. He had this station from 1933 to about 1941. The franchise cost him $6.00 a month. I love looking through old stuff.

I'm Actually Home!

I'm home and sitting down to a big cup of my favorite coffee.

Okay, not that big of a cup. And ignore the french. My sister took my picture on the wrong side of the cup. It was at the dragon boat races in Ottawa. Even though we're officially a bilingual country not all of us speak or understand french.

I'm so proud of myself! I actually did both trips with very little problem. My doctor gave me 12 Ativan and I only needed to take 3 in 6 weeks. Now if we weren't flat broke from paying for all this I'd be raring to go somewhere else in the Fall. I'd like to go on an Alaskan cruise. My husband has been and it's beautiful. Oh well, maybe next year. At least now I have the confidence.

It was a fun and interesting trip but I'm glad to be home. The weeds around here are incredible! I'm the one who gardens so I have my work cut out for me. I've already started but have a ways to go yet. The weather is also astoundingly beautiful so I won't be inside quilting for awhile. I haven't even put my sewing machine back up since it was serviced in April.

So I have nothing quilty to show but next month is our annual quilt walk so I'm sure I'll have a few things to show then. I'm not entering anything cause I haven't finished anything this year. My New Years Resolution was to finish some stuff. I guess I still have 5 months left to do that.
